How to Stop Stainless Steel Bolts Seizing: Thread Galling Guide

To stop stainless steel bolts seizing, use clean undamaged threads, run the nut on slowly, apply a compatible anti-galling lubricant where the specification permits it, and use a torque value calculated for that lubricant. Stop immediately if the nut starts to bind or the torque rises unevenly. Forcing it with an impact wrench turns a recoverable warning into a locked joint.
The usual cause is thread galling, not rust. Galling is adhesive wear between mating metal surfaces. It can lock a new A2 or A4 nut and bolt in seconds, even though both parts are perfectly corrosion resistant.
What stainless steel thread galling looks like
Early galling feels like a brief rough spot or a nut that becomes harder to turn after starting normally. If assembly continues, the thread flanks tear and transfer material. The surfaces build up, friction spikes and the nut can weld itself to the bolt strongly enough for the shank or tool to fail first.

Why stainless fasteners gall
A2 and A4 fasteners are usually austenitic stainless steel. The material is tough and ductile, but relatively prone to adhesive wear under high contact pressure. Each thread touches the mating thread along small loaded areas. Friction and heat can disrupt the protective oxide film, allowing microscopic high points to bond.
Once material transfers, the raised patch digs into the opposite flank. More material moves, more heat is generated and the process accelerates. This explains why a nut can turn normally for several rotations and then seize almost instantly.
The risk rises with:
- high installation speed or an impact tool;
- dry, clean-on-clean austenitic stainless surfaces;
- damaged, dirty or mismatched threads;
- long thread engagement and prevailing-torque lock nuts;
- high clamping load and repeated assembly;
- low clearance between mating threads;
- two parts with similar hardness and surface condition.
Grade and property class matter, but neither makes a joint immune. BSSA notes that class 80 pairings tend to be less prone to galling than class 70 pairings because the harder cold-worked surfaces resist deformation better. You still need sound assembly practice.
The prevention method

1. Check the specification first

2. Inspect and clean both threads
Reject dents, flattened crests, burrs and visible pickup. Remove swarf and grit with a clean brush. A nut should spin freely by hand along the usable thread before significant clamp load begins. Never force a suspect part because it came from the right labelled box.
3. Apply the specified lubricant sparingly
Use an anti-seize or thread lubricant compatible with the stainless grade, temperature, environment and any food, chemical or marine restrictions. Coat the engaged thread consistently. Excess compound creates mess and can contaminate surrounding surfaces without improving the joint.

4. Assemble slowly and squarely
Start by hand. Keep the nut or socket square and use a low, steady speed. Avoid an impact wrench unless the engineered procedure specifically calls for one. Short bursts disguise the feel that normally warns you about rising friction.
5. Tighten once with a controlled method
Use a calibrated torque wrench or the specified preload method. Do not repeatedly tighten, loosen and retighten a stainless assembly without inspecting the threads and confirming whether the nut is reusable. Every cycle changes the surfaces.
Should you mix A2 and A4 to prevent galling?
Different hardnesses can reduce galling tendency, but mixing grades casually is not a reliable prevention plan. A2 and A4 describe corrosion families, while the property class, manufacturing route, thread tolerance and surface finish affect galling. Mixed-metal exposure also needs a corrosion assessment.

Locking nuts and galling
A nylon insert lock nut adds prevailing resistance before the joint is clamped. That resistance generates heat and can hide early thread friction. Run it on slowly. The torque needed to overcome the insert is not all converted into bolt preload, so use the specified tightening method.
All-metal prevailing-torque nuts can create still more heat and contact pressure. Use only approved combinations, particularly in A4 marine hardware. For vibration resistance, the correct locking system depends on temperature, access, reusability and the consequence of loosening.
What to do if the nut has started binding
- Stop the power tool immediately.
- Let the joint cool if it was installed quickly.
- Reverse gently by hand. Do not alternate full-power forward and reverse impacts.
- If it comes off, inspect both parts under good light. Any transferred metal or torn flank means replacement.
- Check pitch, alignment, thread damage and lubricant procedure before trying new parts.
Do not chase a damaged stainless thread and put it back into a critical joint without an approved repair process. The surface damage that started the problem may remain below the visible crest.
How to remove a fully seized stainless nut
Penetrating fluid rarely reverses a true gall weld, though it may help if dirt or corrosion is also present. Keep the work controlled:
- Support the assembly so force does not bend the parent material.
- Protect nearby aluminium, paint, seals and wiring from heat and swarf.
- Use a nut splitter where access and geometry allow.
- Cut the nut or bolt with suitable guarding and fire precautions if replacement is acceptable.
- For a valuable or safety-critical component, stop and use a competent repairer.
Heat can damage coatings, seals and the properties of nearby material. It also expands both stainless parts. Treat it as a controlled repair method, not a first response.
Galling versus corrosion
